What Time Does Scooter’s Coffee Open

SIOUX CENTER—A new business is brewing up excitement in the community.

Scooter’s Coffee in Sioux Center officially opened June 9 despite the process percolating longer than what owners Jay and Kim Van Dyken of Hull were hoping for.

Coffee, tea, smoothies, blenders and even gift cards are all available at the drive-thru kiosk open seven days a week. The kiosk also serves food such as breakfast burritos and sandwiches, cinnamon buns, cookies and muffins all day. Hours are 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Unlike other Scooter’s locations, the Sioux Center space also features a small patio for outdoor seating and free Wi-Fi.

“It’s awesome to have a business in your hometown,” said Jay, noting that Kim is from Sioux Center. “To be able to bring something new and fun to Sioux Center has been great. Our goal is to be part of the fabric of the community. We want to be involved in the schools, the college, the chamber. Give back to them all.”

A grand opening is set for Friday, June 23, which will include an 11 a.m. ribbon cutting hosted by the Sioux Center Chamber of Commerce. All day there will also be a buy one, get one drink special if purchased through the Scooter’s Coffee app.

It’s the second location of the five total the couple is planning. They opened their first Scooter’s kiosk in Sheldon in December 2021. Their third location will be in Rock Valley with the remaining two kiosks to open in southwestern Minnesota.

Another feature unique to the Sioux Center Scooter’s is that it can serve Nitro cold brew coffee.

“This is something not all Scooter’s locations have, not even our Sheldon location,” Jay said. “It’s adding nitrogen to a cup of classic cold brew to give it a smooth and rich, creamy texture to the top.”

It also happens to be Jay’s favorite drink on the menu.

Customers may also see baristas in the drive-thru waiting to take orders or helping with the line.

“That’s called line busting, something people might be familiar with at Chick-fil-A,” Jay said. “Our goal is that by the time the barista takes a customer’s order and payment, their drink is ready when they get to the window.”

Two line busters will be out on grand opening day.

“We don’t want people to see long lines and decide to leave,” he said. “We want them all to come and realize just how fast our service is.

The similarities between Chick-fil-A and Scooter’s drew the couple to the franchise. Before moving back to N’West Iowa the summer of 2020, the couple had dreamed of opening a Chick-fil-A. Family brought up the idea of opening a Scooter’s instead after they moved back to the area.

“We really liked the core values of Chick-fil-A but were also drawn to Scooter’s core values as well,” Kim said. “The brand promise is ‘Amazing People, Amazing Drinks… Amazingly Fast!’ And offer friendly customer service. It felt like a great fit.”

The couple signed on in October 2020 to open five Scooter’s locations.

“Sioux Center was always our goal; we felt this was a growing place and really pushed for this location,” Kim said.

Initially, the company was not opening kiosks in communities that had less than 10,000 people.

“Then there was a change of heart, they were seeing value for the smaller market and we pushed for Sioux Center,” Kim said, noting the parent company selected Sheldon first, which led to its opening first. “Getting to opening day has been a long time coming — three years!”

Part of that delay was finding a proper location within the community.

“We always wanted to be on the north side,” Jay said. “With the industry and commercial business employees in need of a fast option and the high school and college on this side, too. We feel we found the best location. The city was great to work with.”

Construction began on the structure last October.

“We wanted to do construction through the winter so that as soon as the road was in we could open,” Jay said.

And that’s just what happened.

Training of the 35 employees began about a week and a half before the June 9 opening. The employees learned to make drinks on the menu.

The couple’s goal is to put a smile on the faces of not only the customers but also the employees.

“As far as the employee experience, it’s a fun environment to work in,” Jay said. “Kim, That’s the atmosphere we are looking to promote here. We hope that’s what they promote to the customers. It’s about good service and it’s about putting a smile on your face.”

It’s not the first enterprise for the Van Dykens. A decade ago they started Search One Inc., an agriculture, research and IT recruiting business in Hull.

Sacred Grounds Inc. is the company through which they manage their Scooter’s locations.

Scooter’s joins a growing number of coffee enterprises in Sioux Center. Other coffee shops include The Fruited Plain Cafe, Butlers Cafe & Coffee and Casey’s Bakery, all located downtown.
