How to Drink Colada

As we said, colada is a large coffee. Well, just how big can it be?

Bigger than you might think! A standard colada has the same amount of coffee as 5 or 6 cups of espresso. That’s why there’s a certain way to drink it that sets it apart from most other types of coffee consumed around the world.

Colada is meant to be shared with others nearby. Whether it’s your friends, colleagues, or aunts and uncles you haven’t seen in awhile, colada is the way to go. If you have ever walked the busy streets of Little Havana in Miami, you may have noticed a lot of walk-up windows or “ventanitas.” You may have seen groups of people drinking coffee from tiny plastic cups.

Those people are sharing a colada. But that’s not all. They’re also sharing their thoughts on politics; they also gossip. In other words, it is a unique experience that can only be found in Miami.

Is Brewing Colada Hard?

If you’re an expert, no.

Just kidding; making colada is simple, and you can do it from the comfort of your own home, especially if you have tried making cafecito with our fantastic recipe. You will just need some simple, everyday tools that you probably have lying around in your kitchen.

  • Finely ground coffee (make sure it’s Cuban!)
  • Sugar
  • A Moka pot/espresso machine
  • A mixing cup
  • One large serving cup and six small ones
  • A spoon

And that’s it.

The process itself is enjoyable, as you will get a nice foam, or espumita, which is what makes Cuban coffee so unique. Once the espumita and the coffee are in the large serving cup, you can call your guests into the living room and serve them the colada. They’ll be blown away by the taste, aroma, and lovely texture of Cuban coffee.
