Are you tired of your kitchen table being stuck in one place? Are you in need of a more flexible living space? Well, it’s time to consider adding wheels to your table! In this article, we’ll explore the process of transforming your stationary table into a mobile one. So, grab your tools and let’s get started!
The Need for Flexibility
Living in a crowded house with limited space requires innovative solutions. Our kitchen table, originally a desk, has served us well as a sturdy dining area for years. But with our ever-changing needs, we realized that it was time to make our table as adaptable as we are.
The Challenges of Stationary Tables
Our table’s legs were equipped with generic felt slider pads, which did an okay job of sliding but had their downsides. For one, they didn’t slide smoothly on our laminate flooring. They also had a tendency to scratch the surface whenever a hard object got in their way. Additionally, after years of use, the legs had started to loosen and wobble slightly.
The Solution: Casters to the Rescue
While browsing at Lowes one day, I stumbled upon a great deal: a set of affordable casters for just $3.50 per pair. Inspired by the find, I knew it was time to take action. I eagerly purchased the casters and headed home to embark on this exciting project.
Installing the Casters
Before starting the installation process, make sure to measure the dimensions of your table legs. The base of the casters must fit completely inside the legs, aligning the screw holes with the wood. To begin, remove the old slider pads and metal pads from the bottom of the legs using a Leatherman or a flat-bladed screwdriver.
Place a caster on the bottom of each table leg, ensuring a proper fit. Pre-drill holes through the center of each screw hole, using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw shank. This step is crucial to prevent splitting the table legs. Once the holes are drilled, insert screws through the caster holes and screw them into the wood. Repeat this process for the remaining casters on all four legs.
Addressing Leg Wobble
In addition to adding casters, it’s important to tackle any wobbling issues your table may have developed over time. Look at the base of the table legs, where they are held in place by square-headed bolts running through sturdy metal plates. Using a crescent wrench, adjust it to the appropriate size and tighten the bolts until they are snug. Take this opportunity to tighten all the other screws that hold the table together as well.
Enjoying the Results
Once the casters are installed and the table is secure, flip it back over and admire your work. The table can now move freely, providing the flexibility you need. If you prefer the option to lock the table in place, consider replacing one pair of casters with a set that has a locking mechanism. This way, you can easily move the table when needed and secure it in place when desired.
