Discovering the Beauty of Black Locust

The black locust, also known as Robinia or False Acacia, is a type of wood that is renowned for its strength and resilience. It can be found in various parts of the world and is known for its striking appearance. The cookie slab we will be working with has an enchanting shape, accompanied by beautiful cracks and holes, which can be filled with epoxy resin.

Bringing the Beauty to Life

To transform this raw slab into a magnificent coffee table, we will need some essential tools and materials. Turn on the subtitles to follow along with each step of the process.

Preparing the Slab

One side of the slab was flat enough to start working on directly. We began by planing the slab to achieve a smooth surface. However, before moving forward, we needed to address the cracks. Since there were too many to use tape, we applied wood filler to close them.

Sanding and Shaping

After applying the wood filler, we removed the excess by sanding the surface. We then secured the bottom side with tape to ensure a clean finish. Next, we filled all the cracks with epoxy resin, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood.

Refining the Edges

To achieve a polished look, we used a Mini Carver to remove the bark and sand the live edges. We started with an 80 grit paper and gradually moved up to 220 grit to smooth out the edges. This process ensured that the table would be safe and comfortable to use.

Sealing and Finishing

To protect the wood and showcase its natural beauty, we applied linseed oil to the bottom side. For the tabletop, we used Rubio Monocoat, a pure finish that enhances the wood’s grain and color. These finishes not only add a touch of elegance but also provide long-lasting durability.

Adding the Final Touches

To complete our coffee table, we attached hairpin steel legs with wood screws. These legs not only provide stability but also add a modern and stylish touch to the overall design. And just like that, our black wood coffee table is ready to be admired and enjoyed!
