Building the Top and Side Guides

To start, we will cut the top out of beautiful Jarrah wood, measuring it precisely at 500mm. To ensure a straight cut, we will secure a piece of timber along the top utilizing clamps. This 120-year-old, 300mm wide Jarrah wood is a rare find, so we must be cautious not to compromise its quality.

Next, we will cut the side guides for the top out of 40×19 Jarrah wood. These guides will ensure that our nest of tables slides together seamlessly. By placing two pieces of 40×19 on either side of the top and another piece at the front, we create a guide for the smaller nested table. Let’s apply some strong and quick-drying glue to ensure a secure bond.

Shaping the Table Frames and Top

Our table will have three front legs and two side legs, perfect for sliding neatly under a sofa as a convenient side table. While you continue with the cut, I’ll round off the edges of the side frames using a small disc sander. This step adds a touch of elegance to the design.

Once we assemble the table, we will shape the legs, side frames, and top further. However, preparing as much as we can in advance will expedite the process. We have already jigsawed the table top to our desired shape, and the cuts look fantastic!

Concealing the Fixing Points

Now, let’s focus on the finishing touches. We don’t want any visible fittings ruining the table’s aesthetic. While using screws on the underside, we will drill and countersink the screws on the top. To add a unique feature, we will dress the holes with pieces of ebony piano keys. By squaring off the keys on a disc sander, we ensure a perfect fit.

Assembling the Nesting Table

The assembly process will be more manageable and enjoyable with two sets of hands and an abundance of clamps. We will begin by drilling and screwing the base to the legs, gradually forming the larger table. Once the front and side legs, along with the base frames, are attached, we will cut and glue the base supports into position.

Next, we will use a square chisel to cut square holes for the round pegs made from recycled ebony blocks. By gently tapping and gluing them into place, we will create a beautiful and sturdy base for our table. Any excess can be sawed off to ensure a seamless finish.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Now that the assembly is complete, it’s time for the final touches. Apply refined linseed oil to the smaller of the two tables to protect and enhance the rich color and grain of the Jarrah wood. This oil will provide a deep and lustrous finish.
