Making Your Own K-Cup

Brewing coffee without K-Cups may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually a simple process. You just need a few items to pull off this homemade K-Cup magic:

  • A used K-Cup pod
  • Aluminum foil
  • Whole bean coffee or coffee grounds

Depending on the type of K-Cup you have, you might also need a coffee filter. Some K-Cups contain instant coffee, which eliminates the need for a filter. However, if you don’t see a filter inside the pod, you will have to grab one from your drip machine or pour-over cone.

Let the Brewing Begin

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to create your makeshift K-Cup. First, remove the foil from the top of the used K-Cup and empty the coffee grounds into the trash. Rinse the pod thoroughly to ensure it’s clean and ready for use.

If there is no attached filter inside, take a #4 pour-over cone filter or a standard drip machine filter and cut it to the size of the K-Cup. Make sure it reaches the top of the pod, and don’t worry if it’s slightly taller and wraps over the rim. This will actually make cleanup easier by lifting all the grounds out of the cup.

If you have whole bean coffee, grind approximately 14 grams (0.5 oz) of coffee to a medium-fine consistency and pour it into the K-Cup. If you have pre-ground coffee, simply fill the K-Cup to just below the rim.

Next, cut a piece of aluminum foil measuring around 2 by 6 inches (5.08 by 15.24 centimeters). Fold it in half lengthwise and tightly wrap it over the top of the K-Cup.

You might have noticed a puncture hole at the bottom of the K-Cup from its previous use in the Keurig machine. Align this hole with the barb inside the K-Cup slot.
