Fall Centerpieces and More

When I was stilled lived in New York, it’s like the weather knew that once the calendar flipped to September, the slight chill in the air was supposed to kick in.

Here in Tennessee, we don’t quite have the same weather cues – the mornings are a little chillier, but the days will feel like summer for a few more weeks yet. However, that’s no reason to put off fall decorating. And today we are talking about a little fall table decor.

In the past, I think setting down a fall centerpiece on the table was all that was meant by ‘fall table decor.’ But my, how things have changed! With social media, there is just so much access to inspiration, whether you love farmhouse fall decor or any variation of it (rustic, modern, boho) or something totally different.

There’s no need to be pressured into creating more than a centerpiece, but there’s plenty of ideas out there waiting to be re-created!

All the Tables for Fall

When it comes to fall decorating, you have several fall tables to consider. Of course, the dining table. But there’s also the console table, the coffee table, the end tables – you can even throw in the countertops if you want.

Each area is a little nuanced, but if you think about it, the primary thing to consider is this:

Is your table a functional one or not?” And that translates into – will you have to move your table decor on and off the table?

If your table is just for decoration, you’re going to have a lot more freedom. If it’s a table you don’t use very often but is mostly for decor, you really have no limitations when planning your decor. You can have a lot of moving parts and make it as big or intricate as you want.

Dining Tables, Kitchen Tables and Countertops

So let’s start with the dining table – do you eat at this table every day? Can your decor stay on the table even if you eat there?

If it’s a table that gets used often, like a kitchen table or even a countertop, you basically have two choices.

First, you can scale down your centerpiece or tablescape so it can remain in place while you go about your business at the table – whether it’s eating, homework, etc.

Second, you can create your centerpiece on an anchor that makes it easy to move on and off.

This way, you don’t have to recreate the centerpiece every single time you have to put it back. A riser, a wood board, a basket, a bowl, or a tray serve as a fantastic anchors that can make display easily transportable, rather than laying all of your items directly on the table.

A large dough bowl filled with fall stems and pumpkins really make a nice centerpiece as well, that can be moved fairly easily. You can even just keep a vase with fall stems in it. Simple is definitely in these days!

Chances are, for any of the above tables, the table is more for decorative purposes than useful purposes, so you have a lot of flexibility here. When I decorate my tables, I like to create a vignette for each one. It’s like it’s own little universe. I want it to coordinate with the rest of the room and furniture and areas near by, but there is freedom to vary it. (You can check this out for amazing tips and inspiration for how to create fall vignettes).

When I’m doing tables, I like to have an anchor piece, similar to what I’d use for a fall table centerpiece: a tray, a basket, a rise, a wood board.

Then I add some height for a statement piece – like a vase with fall stems.

Then add in smaller decor items – votives, pumpkins, smaller bottles with stems, beaded garland. Groups of 3 or odd numbers tend to look best, but I don’t always follow that rule. You’ll want to keep a similar color theme within that groupings but it’s fine to create something a little different on a different table.

Trends for 2023 : Modern Fall Table Decor

This post contains affiliate links. See Disclosures for details

As I’ve been going through Instagram and roaming the stores, I’m seeing a lot more of a swing toward modern decor – not super-modern, but modern mixed in with other styles like rustic, farmhouse, boho, etc. By modern, I mean less clutter, cleaner lines, simpler displays. Less cutesy signs and objects, but instead including other elements that are a little more stylish.

A few trends to consider when you’re decorating your tables for fall this season:

(You can click the images below to get them on Amazon!)

Pampas Grass:

While not necessarily just for fall, the neutral beige colors pair perfectly with fall decor and give that harvest-y feel.

Faux Stems with Big Brown Leaves

I’ve seen this in many homes this season – those big, brown leaf stems. They give a rustic feel, and also look fantastic as mantel garland as well. They work especially well if you have a simple, neutral monochromatic style.

Brown Bottles:

You can fill these bottles with pampas grass or wheat stalks or other kinds of faux fall stems. Even branches work for this look.

Pink Pumpkins and Color Schemes:

This is definitely more of a modern boho kind of look, but it is definitely trending! Keep an eye out for non-traditional pumpkin colors as well. Last year I did a navy and copper fall theme, and I handpainted all my own pumpkins because no one was really doing that last year. This year, I’ve seen navy and copper everywhere! So think a little out of the box!

Trays and Baskets

These serve as wonderful anchors for your table decor. Dough bowls work fabulously as well as do tier trays!
