Unleash Your Creativity with Live Edge Coffee Tables

Picture this: you’ve just moved into a new apartment and you’re eager to make it feel like home. One item that can truly transform your space is a coffee table that embodies both style and functionality. The solution? A live edge coffee table. Not only does it serve as a stunning centerpiece, but it also provides a versatile space for dining in studio living.

If you’re familiar with my work, you know how much I adore live edge projects. There’s something captivating about the natural beauty and unique features found in these pieces of wood. After stumbling upon an extraordinary slab at a local lumber dealer, I knew I had to turn it into a one-of-a-kind live edge coffee table. So, I embarked on a project that would take a few weekends of dedication but would result in a piece that would last a lifetime and beyond, thanks to the incredible products from Rust-oleum!

Crafting Your Own Live Edge Coffee Table

This project is a collaboration with Rust-oleum, a reputable brand that ensures exceptional quality. Before we dive into the step-by-step process, let me share a little secret with you. While I made this table for my new apartment, my mom loved it so much that she simply had to have it. That’s a testament to how incredible this piece turned out.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Let’s start by gathering the necessary materials and tools. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Live edge lumber
  • Varathane Super Glaze in Aged Brown
  • Varathane Super Glaze in Clear
  • Metal table legs
  • Router (Optional) & Straight Cut Bit
  • Sander
  • Bowtie Inlay Kit (Optional)
  • Epoxy Mixing Tools
  • Wire Brush/Attachment

The Step-by-Step Process

  1. Flatten the Slab: Begin by flattening the slab. There are various methods to achieve this, but I used a combination of a sander and a router with a sled.

  1. Preserve Voids and Holes: If your slab has voids and holes that you wish to preserve, tape up the underside of the slab to prevent epoxy resin from leaking through. Mix up a small batch of Varathane Super Glaze in Aged Brown and pour it into the voids.

  1. Flatten and Sand Again: After the epoxy resin cures, flatten and sand the slab once more. Take this opportunity to clean up the live edge and ensure a smooth surface.

  1. Add Decorative Wood Bow Ties: If your slab has cracks, consider adding decorative wood bow ties to prevent further spreading. Use a router and a bow tie template to create this eye-catching detail.

  1. Finish with Varathane Super Glaze: Before applying the final finish, give the slab a final sanding to a smooth 220 grit. Mix up another batch of Varathane Super Glaze, this time in Aged Brown, and pour it over the entire surface. Spread it evenly, allowing it to self-level.
