Remember the days when Dunkin’ delighted our taste buds with the Coffee Coolatta, striking the perfect balance between sweetness and robust coffee flavor? If you have fond memories of that delectable treat, you may be familiar with Dunkin’s Frozen Coffee, which replaced the beloved Coolatta in 2017. While it promised a more pronounced coffee taste and an overall superior experience, I recently tried it and found the coffee flavor too sharp, almost overpowering, and the sweetness just a tad too cloying. I longed for that Coolatta magic.
Now, enter the Butter Pecan Crunch Frozen Coffee. Could this drink finally bridge the gap between nostalgia and the current reality? Created with Frozen Coffee, a luscious Butter Pecan Swirl syrup, and tantalizing Cocoa Caramel Sprinkles, this beverage is crowned with whipped cream, a caramel drizzle, and even more of those irresistible Cocoa Caramel sprinkles. Although the sprinkles themselves didn’t make much of an impact on the overall taste, the real surprise was yet to come.
As I cautiously took my first sip, the distinct coffee flavor I had experienced with previous Frozen Coffees greeted me. Disappointed, I thought, “Here we go again.” But then, something miraculous happened. The gentle sweetness of the Butter Pecan Swirl syrup delicately mellowed the coffee’s intensity, creating a more subdued, reminiscent flavor of the original Coolatta. While the buttery notes were present, I didn’t quite catch the nuttiness. Perhaps the overall sweetness overwhelmed my taste buds, preventing me from fully experiencing the subtleties.
In the end, I enjoyed this delightful creation so much that I practically chugged it down, only to regret it later with a bit of a stomachache. After all, as a sweets fan, it can be tough to find enough room in one’s tummy. My haste also meant that the whipped cream didn’t have much time to melt, resulting in me slurping up pure whipped cream through a straw towards the end. And that’s when the “crunch” factor came into play, with the sprinkles making their grand appearance.
Now, I can’t help but wonder if my experience would have been different had I savored the drink more slowly. If the whipped cream had more time to melt, would the sprinkles have mingled with the liquid, creating a truly “crunchy” sensation? However, the Frozen Coffee itself is thick and substantial, so it’s not as though the whipped cream can seamlessly blend into the drink like it does with a latte. Nevertheless, I’m tempted to buy it again just to explore this melting theory, even if I know deep down that I’ll likely devour it in record time once more.
While I personally wouldn’t mind skipping the whipped topping and reveling in the drink alone, this indulgence is a true delight. That said, I can’t help but continue pining for the original Coffee Coolatta. Is it too much to ask for a comeback?
