Are you tired of clutter in your living room but hate the idea of wasting leftover scrap pieces from previous projects? Look no further because today I’m going to show you how to build a simple, yet stylish coffee table using those very scraps!
Repurposing Scrap Pieces
I always tend to keep medium-sized offcuts from my woodworking projects, with the hope of eventually finding a use for them. It’s a way to avoid wastage while also keeping things organized. After going through my stash, I selected a few pieces that I knew wouldn’t be used in any new builds and decided to transform them into a beautiful coffee table.
Creating the Tabletop
The first step in the process was to bring all the selected pieces to an even thickness for the tabletop. I joined each piece on one face and one edge, and then ran them through the planer to achieve a consistent thickness of just over three-quarters of an inch. I also ripped out a few strips of varying widths, such as three inches, four and a half inches, and six inches. These strips would later be used to create an interesting, random pattern for the tabletop.
Designing the Layout
With the strips ready, I played around with different layouts on my workbench until I found one that I liked. Once I figured out the design, I marked the remaining pieces and cut them to the required length. I then used some additional scraps to fill in any gaps in the top, ensuring a clean and modern look.
Building the Base
Now that the tabletop was taking shape, it was time to focus on the base. I ripped my stock into pieces for the legs and stretchers using the table saw. For the legs, I wanted them to be perfectly square, so I cut them to width and thickness accordingly. The stretchers and aprons were cut to a different size to provide stability and support.
Joining the Pieces
To join the half-inch thick pieces, I initially considered using pocket screws. However, I encountered some issues with weak joints due to the thin material. I then tried using dominoes to strengthen the joints but ended up damaging one of the pieces. Eventually, I decided to go back to pocket screws for attaching the legs, after filling in the damaged area of the leg. It was a lesson learned to trust my initial idea.
Completing the Project
After resolving the base construction, I could finally turn my attention back to the tabletop. I sanded everything flush and added a little quarter-inch rabbit along the bottom edge for a finished look. The end result was a unique coffee table that not only provided a stylish centerpiece but also solved the problem of excess scrap pieces.
