How is Decaf Coffee Made?

A More Indirect Approach

Alternatively, the Swiss Water Process uses osmosis and solubility to remove caffeine. The beans are bathed in hot water to draw out the caffeine and then passed through a charcoal filter to catch the large caffeine molecules. This process ensures that the flavors stay intact, giving the decaf coffee a more authentic taste.

Another method, known as the CO2 process, involves soaking the beans in water and then subjecting them to high-pressure liquid CO2. The CO2 draws out the caffeine while leaving the flavors behind, resulting in a decaf coffee that closely resembles its caffeinated counterpart.

Is Decaf Coffee Worth It?

Decaf coffee might seem like a pointless choice to some, but studies have shown that it still retains some health benefits. While decaf coffee does contain caffeine, it is significantly lower than regular coffee. According to the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, most major decaf coffee brands contain around 8.6 to 13.9 milligrams of caffeine, compared to around 85 milligrams in a regular cup.

A study published in Nutritional Neuroscience found that decaf coffee can potentially improve the brain’s ability to metabolize energy, making it beneficial for preventing and treating decline from diabetes and aging.
