Crafted with Care

Created by Caleb from YouCanMakeThisToo, this coffee table was commissioned by a viewer who was captivated by Caleb’s epoxy charcuterie boards video. To keep costs down, Caleb decided to design a table using materials he already had in his workshop. With the help of some Photoshop magic, he came up with a concept that resonated with his client.

Precision and Detail

Caleb began the construction process by cutting the slabs of wood according to his Photoshop mock-up. He wanted to achieve flat and parallel surfaces without using a planer sled. Instead, he opted for a different technique, jointing the slabs until they were reasonably flat. This approach allowed him to avoid the hassle of dealing with uneven slabs.

Creating the Form

To create the form for the table, Caleb used melamine marker boards instead of regular melamine. These marker boards are ideal because epoxy doesn’t stick to them. By attaching the marker boards to a sheet of MDF with Starbond CA glue, Caleb was able to construct the form. He then trimmed the edges to ensure a perfect fit.

Making the Pour

With the form prepared, Caleb sealed it using Tuck Tape to prevent any epoxy leakage. He also applied silicone to the corners for added security. After mixing the epoxy and adding pigments for a striking blue color, Caleb poured it into the form. The epoxy was clamped down to prevent floating.

Revealing the Masterpiece

After several days, it was time to remove the form and unveil the stunning tabletop. Caleb carefully removed the sides of the form, which came off easily. Breaking the seal between the bottom of the form and the bottom of the table required finesse, but Caleb managed it using a putty knife. Finally, the top surface was revealed, showcasing the intricate details.

Finishing Touches

To enhance the warmth and depth of the wood, Caleb applied a diluted TotalBoat Halcyon finish, allowing the color to penetrate while avoiding any amber hues on the epoxy. He coated the entire table with TotalBoat Clear Halcyon for protection and a glossy finish. The result is a table that is not only visually stunning but also durable.

The Perfect Base

To complete the coffee table, Caleb crafted a base with welded metal pieces. Using the Minion Fireball Square set, he achieved precise angles and welded the pieces together. After grinding and painting the base with appliance epoxy paint, Caleb attached the top to the base using pre-made tabs for a secure and seamless connection.

Illuminating the Space

To add a touch of magic, Caleb installed LED strips on the underside of the table. By placing the battery packs on Velcro for easy access, he ensured that changing the batteries would be a breeze. The LED strips, originally placed directly on the table, were moved to the frame to create a more subtle and refined look.

A Centerpiece to Cherish

With its dark wood, mesmerizing epoxy design, and LED lights, this round coffee table is truly a centerpiece worth cherishing. Whether you’re entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet moment alone, this table will undoubtedly make a statement in any room.
