Have you ever wondered what happens to inmates after they are released from prison? In a gripping three-part series titled “Life Inside,” KGW explored the journeys of three women as they prepared to leave Oregon’s only women’s prison, Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. Now, after years of following their stories, we are thrilled to share an update on their lives outside prison walls.

Vanessa Sharrod: A Story of Resilience and Empowerment
Vanessa Sharrod, the first to be released, has embraced her newfound freedom with determination and drive. Reunited with her family, including her three children, she has not let her past define her future. Sharrod recently finished her associate’s degree and became a certified U.S. Peer Wellness Specialist, specializing in social work. But her achievements don’t stop there. She now works full-time for the YWCA, advocating for women in prison, just as she had expressed during our initial series.
Sharrod’s current focus is lobbying Oregon legislators to renew funding for the Family Preservation Project. As a mother herself, she understands the importance of maintaining strong bonds between incarcerated mothers and their children. Sharrod’s relentless dedication to supporting women at Coffee Creek is a testament to her own experience and the opportunities she had within the program.
Mariah Williams: A Fresh Start and New Horizons
In our latest update with Mariah Williams, we discovered that life has been treating her well since her release in July 2020. With a full-time job as a house painter, Williams is confidently building her credit and embracing her independence. Although navigating life during a pandemic presented its challenges, Williams found solace in the anonymity provided by masks. This allowed her to ease back into social interactions and reconnect with friends and family.
Looking ahead, Williams aspires to work with teenagers, particularly in teaching outdoor skills. Her time at Coffee Creek, combined with her experiences in the Life Program, has equipped her with the necessary skills to pursue her passion. Williams’ enthusiasm for her future endeavors is contagious, and she is excited to introduce young people to the wonders of nature.
Amy Lorenzo: A Silent Update
While we were not able to connect with Amy Lorenzo for an update, we understand that each woman in our series has faced personal challenges and the additional difficulties brought on by the pandemic. We wish her well on her journey and hope that she, too, has found the support and resources she needs to thrive.
The stories of these three remarkable women serve as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the transformative experiences within the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. At Marmalade Cafe, we believe in second chances and supporting individuals as they rebuild their lives. If you want to learn more about our commitment to making a difference, visit Marmalade Cafe.
