Carrot Egg Or Coffee Mean

When you’re met with pressure, how do you respond? Would you say your perform well under pressure, or no? I want to share a story with you that may give you some perspective, and help you be your best self, even in tough circumstances.

This is the story of the carrot, the egg, and the bean—and I can’t think of a more appropriate story for the times.

Times of Hardship

The story begins when a young girl goes to visit her grandmother, and with a heavy heart explains that she is finding it hard to keep going. The girl’s life was becoming increasingly more difficult, and she couldn’t see how she could carry on. Every time she thought she solved a problem, and new one would appear. And the girl was tired of fighting and struggling.

That’s when the girl’s grandmother took her into the kitchen, filled three pots with water, and set them on the stove to boil. In the first pot, she added carrots. In the second, eggs. And in the third, she added coffee beans. She did this all without a work to her granddaughter.

After twenty minutes or so, the woman turned of the burners, and removed the pots and their contents. She then fished out each item respectively, putting the carrots, eggs, and coffee in their own bowls.

“What do you see?” she asked the girl.

“I see carrots, eggs, and coffee.”

A Transformation

At the girl’s reply, the grandmother tried a new approach. She had the girl feel the carrots, noting how they were now soft. Next, she asked the girl to break an egg, which the girl did. The egg was now hard-boiled and solid. Finally, the grandmother asked the girl to sip the coffee. The girl smiled at the rich aroma and deep flavor.

“What does this mean, grandmother?” the girl asked.

“Each of these things faced the same adversity, yet each has become something new and different from the others,” the grandmother explained.

The carrot went into the boiling water strong and unrelenting. Yet after being subjected to the water, became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, it’s shell thin and brittle, and it’s insides liquid. Yet the water turned quickly hardened the egg. The coffee was unique, however. After entering the boiling water, the beans changed the water altogether.

A Revelation

“Which are you,” the grandmother asked. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

The girl pondered this. The carrot, while seemingly strong, wilted and lost its strength when push came to shove. The egg, with its malleable spirit, changed it’s tune when under pressure—appearing unscathed on the outside, but hardened to the world on the inside. Then, there was the coffee bean. When things were at there worst, the coffee beans made a bad situation better, transforming the circumstances. When the night is darkest, and trials are the greatest, do you elevate to another level?

I hope that you’ve found this story as inspiring as I do. We’ve all been in this shared experience of COVID-19 together, and we each have slightly different circumstances and ways in which we deal with these challenges. As tough as times are, do we allow the circumstances to change us, or do we change the circumstances instead?

I aspire to be like the coffee bean in every circumstance, so that I can continue to persist without losing myself to my challenges.
